Ms. LS is a nurse in her late 30s, married with two young children. Due to COVID, her husband lost his job and started drinking. Then their family lost their house and ended up moving into a shared house with other families, and of the relatives who stay with them, one smokes heavily and another uses drugs. During this difficult time in her life, LS became depressed and started smoking and binge drinking 20+ beers on the weekend, a sadly common practice in South Africa.
After realizing that she wanted to change her lifestyle and be there more for her children, Ms. LS came to SAHARA for help to decrease her alcohol and tobacco consumption. Through the use of SAHARA's counselling program and medications funded by CHILD, LS was able to decrease from 20 to 4 cigarettes per day, and no longer binge drinks. Such a huge achievement! She is also being treated for her depression and is now much happier with her life. She is less irritable and says "I am a much nicer person now".
SAHARA is no doubt making a difference in the lives of their service users by providing a helping hand and hope for a better future. Though each person’s journey will have ups and downs, CHILD is so honoured to provide the additional support that medication can give to those battling substance use disorder!
