Tribute to Sarah Walton
It is with deep shock, disbelief and profound sadness that we share with you the passing of one of our CHILD Board members, Sarah Walton. Sarah was only 29 when she and her mother were killed in a motor vehicle accident, on April 28, 2025.

Sarah became a CHILD Board member in 2017 when she was only 21 years old and a student nurse. Even at such a young age, Sarah’s desire to help those in need was very apparent. On the CHILD Board she showed wisdom beyond her years with her contributions toward decisions, creative ideas for new projects and knowledgeable leadership. As well, Sarah always helped with great enthusiasm and with whatever needed to be done for CHILD’s annual fundraisers. She was also an excellent speaker at our fundraisers and spoke with great passion about the work that CHILD was doing in India, South Africa and Haiti.

Despite Sarah's busy schedule with endless on-call shifts when she was in the UofC medical school and then during her Family Medicine residency, she always tried her hardest to join in the monthly CHILD Board meetings. Even during this time when a chance for her to relax was rare, she made time for the suffering, the poor, the downtrodden and the marginalized whom CHILD helps. These men, women and especially children were a vital part of Sarah’s life, and it showed at each and every board meeting that she attended. Each meeting, Sarah was not only there physically, but also with a deep passion and a profound desire to help people in the Third World.

Just before her passing, Sarah had been in Africa for a month doing a medical elective. Despite the stress and exhaustion of travelling from Africa back to Canada, she joined us on her last layover of the very long trip, in Vancouver, on her phone, so she could be part of the CHILD board meeting. This is who Sarah was. Giving, giving and then giving even more to all those around her. Her compassion knew no bounds. She was genuinely humble. She was kind, loving and intelligent. As one person said, “Sarah carried a light within her.” God’s Light. The Light of the love of Jesus.
As a board we will donate the funds needed to drill a fresh-water well in an impoverished community in India, in memory of Sarah. Through her well, Sarah will go on giving HOPE, HEALTH and JOY to countless men, women and especially children, whose lives will be profoundly changed because of her well. Sarah will be deeply missed by many, including all of us on the CHILD Board. Even though her life here on earth has come to an end, the very meaningful differences that she has made to countless numbers of people in so many beautiful ways, will live on forever.
