SOUTH AFRICA
AIDS has taken the lives of many parents in South Africa. As a result, many children are raised by their siblings, grandmothers (gogos) or are taken in by neighbours.

The principal of Slangspruit Primary School, Mr. Msomi, and his staff are devoted to improving conditions and education for these children in this community. Mr. Msomi' dream is for Slangspruit Primary School to the be a light in the neighbourhood.

The CHILD Foundation's directors have been connected to Slangspruit Primary School for many years.

In 2014, the CHILD Foundation decided to partner with the school to further quality education and improve nutrition for students.
CHILD has been  involved in giving opportunity to individuals to provide scholarships to students from Slangspruit to get quality high school education in a well resourced High School. In the past CHILD also provided daily milk to the Kindergarten and Grade 1 children.

In 2021, CHILD funded 6 desktop  computers and a printer for Slangspruit Primary School for a lab that the teachers can use for curriculum development and research.

CHILD funds  scholarships for the top students at Slangspruit Primary School to attend Alexandra High School. Alexandra High has a much higher level of education and more resources. It is not a private school, but it does require a higher tuition fee than the government schools.  This means that  most students living in the township cannot afford to attend.

The current students attending Alexandra High School from Slangspruit, have adapted well and are showing strong academic achievement. CHILD currently is providing 3 students with scholarships. Carolyn Burns has been mentoring the scholarship students for years . She is encouraging them as they are venturing into new territory . She  also keeps them accountable to the sponsors.
The students have been working very hard and are doing extremely well, even in times of COVID when the teachers have been using Whatsapp to connect with them during school closures.
